The chief and vice chief of Australia’s defence force will have their terms extended by two years.

General Angus Campbell and Vice Admiral David Johnston will stay in their roles until 2024.

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles made the announcement on Tuesday and said the government recognised the burden placed upon them in the roles.

A new team of navy, army and air force heads were also announced.

Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has been selected as navy chief, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart will be army chief and Air Marshal Robert Chipman will be air force chief.
