The 2022 iteration of the tournament is being played in Red Deer at the Peavey Mart Centrium, home of the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels.
It is the first time since 2000 that there is just a single host city for the tournament. It typically is split between two locations and venues, however, Red Deer will have all of the games this time. It is the second time the city has hosted the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, after previously acting as one of the two hosts in 2018 along with Edmonton.
Hlinka Cup 2022 standings, groups
There are eight teams competing at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
The clubs are split into two groups of four. Each team will play three games in round-robin fashion, gaining points for wins, overtime wins and overtime losses.
The two top teams from each group advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 seed from Group A will face the No. 2 seed from Group B and vice versa. The winners of those semifinals will play in the gold medal game, and the losers will square off for bronze.
